Sump Pump Battery Backup
If you are looking to supply your sump pump in case of a power outage, we recommend that you install the Bernini Design Be3000 emergency power supply with high performance embedded ATS system.
It is not an UPS, it is not a power station. It is about a brand-new concept especially suited for sump pumps. It integrates a normally closed ATS system. In other words, when the Be3000 is not active, the sump pump is directly connected to the mains. In case of a power ouatage the ATS system activates the battery-operated inverter. After a 10-second delay, the sump pump restarts. Depending on the nominal power of the pump and its duty cycle, the autonomy ranges from 60 up to 120 minutes. If the mains restores, after 15 seconds, the ATS system will again connect the pump to the mains. A battery-charging cycle will take place for about 6 to 12 hours. Once the battery is fully charged, the user will experience zero power consumption. All electronic parts enter a sleep mode. In some batteries that are unbalanced, the excess energy supplies a microprocessor-based high accuracy equilibrator. This is the key to guarantte long term life of the storage battery.

FLOOD PREVENTION DEVICE DATA SHEET
PREVENT FLOODING DUE TO POWER FAILURES
We can confidently state that Bernini Design, with over 35 years of experience, can offer proven, reliable flood response services. Despite operating in 32 countries, Bernini Design remains a small company focused on helping private clients by offering a 24/7 telephone number for information and technical and sales assistance. From our experience, prevention is crucial to avoiding the inconvenience of flooding.
In addition to 750W and 1500W submersible pump rescue systems for primarily domestic use, we also design much more powerful flood control systems for condominiums and industrial applications. We're always available to answer your questions at 335 70 77 148.
SOME METEOROLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Flooding is associated with particular weather conditions, especially in conjunction with power outages. It's difficult to size an emergency flood control system. Each situation must be carefully assessed. There are too many variables at play. However, we can estimate the pump's power based on a hypothetical surface area subject to rainfall and its intensity.
PUMP POWER
A common submersible pump for rainwater removal has a power of 750W. A submersible pump can pump 10,000 to 12,000 liters per hour. A typical immersion depth of 5 meters and a suitable discharge pipe of 10 meters in length are assumed. The pump's flow rate is influenced by the degree of water contamination, the pump's state of maintenance, the efficiency of the pipes, and proper positioning of the pump.
AFFECTED AREA
It's obviously not possible to generalize water ingress; it depends on numerous construction factors. However, we can imagine a 1,000-square-meter yard that adequately conveys rainwater to the pump. This could be equivalent to a small house on a 1,000-square-meter plot. Obviously, the roof plays a role in collecting water. Water ingress from adjacent areas obviously significantly worsens the following considerations.
MODERATE RAIN
In moderate rainfall, around 2 mm, 2 liters of water accumulate per hour per square meter. A 1,000 m2 yard therefore discharges 2,000 liters per hour. We approximate 3,000 liters if water is piped from the neighborhood. The concept of rainfall intensity, while subjective, has well-defined characteristics at the international level.
MODERATE DOWNBURST
In heavy rain, the flow rate doubles to 4 liters per hour. This results in a level between 4,000 and 6,000 liters. In this case, the 750W pump still maintains its performance.

Heavy rain, however, is a significant phenomenon. Large green areas can accumulate enormous amounts of water. The water will soon find its own path and, unfortunately, could enter your basement.
DOWNBURSTS OR WATER BOMB
The water bomb cannot be generalized, but it is estimated to exceed 50 liters/hour per square meter. This involves transferring over 50,000 liters of water. Obviously, it is not capable of transferring all the water. At least two pumps are required. As a final consideration, we can state that a 750W rescuer covers the scenarios of common rains and thunderstorms. Certainly, a 1500W rescuer provides safety in the event of extraordinary events.

When sizing the submersible pump and its electrical backup device, the flow of water coming from the surrounding areas must be taken into consideration.
THE FLOOD RESPONSE DEVICE WITH ATS AND BUILT-IN BATTERIES
When the mains power is present, the pump is connected to the electrical grid. Unlike a UPS, which operates completely idle when the mains power is present, the Be3000 operates in complete standby mode with charged batteries. It consumes no power. However, if the mains voltage is unsuitable, the flood protection device activates an internal system that converts the battery voltage to a suitable voltage instead of the mains voltage. The backup battery life depends on the size of the installed batteries and the power required by the submersible pumps. On this page, we provide answers to frequently asked questions about backup devices.
USE A UPS?
The UPS has a special device that connects the pump to the mains under normal conditions. This means that the converter that transforms the battery voltage into a voltage compatible with the pump only kicks in in the event of a power failure. The lifespan of the electronic components is therefore extremely long.
Essentially, with the mains power present, there is no power consumption if the pump is idle. The UPS is a device that permanently transforms the battery voltage into a voltage compatible with the pump. This wastes energy, amounting to several dozen watt-hours per day, which results in annual electricity costs even if the pump only runs a few times. Furthermore, the UPS, being constantly on 24/7, unnecessarily drains the life of the electronic components. The Be3000, which only starts up during blackouts, has a practically unlimited lifespan. In the long run, a UPS keeps the batteries constantly under load. Experience has shown that it is essential to replace them every 2 or 3 years. The electronic parts of the UPS also wear out, especially in the presence of power surges. In the event of power surges, the flood protection system stops the pump and restarts it only when the electrical parameters are suitable and stable. Once its batteries are recharged, the flood rescuer enters a hibernation state with ridiculous power consumption compared to a UPS or uninterruptible power supply.

The Be3000 is designed for submersible pumps, meaning it can understand their behavior and manage protection in the event of a blocked rotor or short circuit. Inrush current is electronically controlled and limited to 60 amps. However, the Be3000 is protected against short circuits up to 250 amps.
The recommended installation is vertical, on the wall, using six wall plugs and 8mm screws. Electrical connections are made using a simple 16A socket (for the pump) and plug (for the mains connection).
WHAT DO P1 AND P2 MEAN FOR A SUBMERSIBLE PUMP?
P1 indicates the maximum electrical power absorbed by the pump. P2 indicates the power actually delivered to pump water. P1 also indicates the nominal voltage and the corresponding ampere consumption. Therefore, P1 is the value to consider if you intend to purchase a battery-powered backup system. Obviously, due to electrical and mechanical losses, P2 is significantly lower. For example, a good pump with a P1 of 1200W has a P2 of around 800W.
FLOOD RESPONSE UNIT RUNNING TIME
We produce two models: 750W and 1500W. This means you need to know the pump's power. There's usually a label on the pump body. You can use a Be3000-1500W for a small 300W pump. This will provide greater runtime. However, you cannot use the Be3000-750W for a 1000W pump: the Be3000 will shut down within 5 seconds. If in doubt, please call technical support at 335 70 77 148.
FLOOD RESCUE DEVICE BATTERY LIFE
The Be3000 batteries are rated for 500 complete charge and discharge cycles. Considering 20 cycles per year, the lifespan is 25 years. The batteries are standard 26650 lithium batteries. They can be easily replaced by a qualified technician. They are available commercially for 5 to 8 euros. The Be3000-750W contains 64 batteries, while the Be3000-1500W contains 125 batteries.

GENERAL FEATURES
Maximum continuous output power: 750W. Approximate battery life: 2 hours at 450W and 5 hours at 200W. Battery pack consists of 64 26650 lithium batteries. IP42 protection rating with the front door closed. Wall-mounted cabinet with 36 vertical modules and 6 holes. The 15-kilogram weight requires six 8 mm anchors (minimum 8 mm wall hole). The cabinet dimensions are 450x4600x230 mm. Ensure the wall is solid enough to support the weight of the cabinet. Inside the packaging, you will find a cardboard template showing the positions of the holes. Place the template on the wall and mark the holes with a pencil. No other equipment should be installed adjacent to the cabinet within 50 cm of the center in all directions. The product should not be installed in damp cellars or in areas without air circulation. It's a good idea to have a suitable fire extinguisher nearby for electrical panels. Don't use water to put out fires.

Do not activate the emergency device: the four-pole switch must always be kept in the OFF position as shown in the following figure (off) during all installation phases. Due to the considerable weight, two people are required to complete the operation.

The panel has two cables: one with a plug to plug into a 230V power outlet. One cable has a socket to connect the pump. Do not cut the Be3000 cables, as this increases the risk of short circuits and electric shock. By maintaining the plug-socket system, you can connect the pump directly to the mains, thus completely disconnecting the Be3000. Keep the sockets and plugs off the ground to avoid contact, SHOCKS, and SHORT CIRCUITS in the event of flooding. Cables running on the floor are a dangerous obstacle to walking.

WARNING: WHEN YOU TURN ON THE FOUR-POLE SWITCH, YOU WILL HAVE ELECTRICITY AT THE CABLE SOCKET. THE FLOOD PREVENTION DEVICE IS A POWER GENERATOR. THEREFORE, CONSIDER IT A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS DEVICE.
Once the flood prevention device is installed on the wall, plug it into a 230V power outlet. Install a 230V 16-amp SHUKO plug on the pump cable. Connect the pump plug to the Be3000 output cable socket.

Turn the four-pole switch to the ON position.

If the network is present, the dashboard lights up, after a few seconds, as shown in the following figure

When first installed, the red light may flash for a few hours to indicate that the battery is low. In the event of a power failure, the emergency backup system will activate after about 30 seconds. The panel will look like the following figure.

In the event of an alarm, the red light remains on. The signal may remain on continuously or flash. Alarms reset automatically after 30 minutes. Alternatively, alarms can be cleared by turning the four-pole switch off for a few seconds. If the alarm occurs again, contact technical support at 335 70 77 148. Alarm descriptions follow.
